| PELVIC GIRDLE MYTHBUSTERS COURSE (JOHANNESBURG ONLY): |
Pelvic Girdle Pain – ‘Mythbusters’ Tanya Bell-Jenje (BSc physio, UCT, MSc physio, Wits) Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) is often felt by the practitioner to be confusing & mystical. It is associated with poorly validated & complicated principles & treatment techniques. Evidence shows that manual therapy & manipulation can only result in short term pain relief. There is no evidence of long term benefits with these techniques. As yet, there are no reliable clinical tests to analyse movement at the Sacro-iliac joint (SIJ), but certain tests to assess lumbo-pelvic load transfer have been validated. Also, pelvic distortions are now known not to be due to ‘positional faults’ but changes in motor control across the SIJ. These altered patterns of motor control are variable between patients. Patients with PGP fall into different sub-groups according to various physical, pathoanatomical and psychosocial factors, including the acuteness or chronicity of their symptoms. In clinical practice we cannot be completely ‘evidence-based’, but we can be ‘evidence-informed’. The intention of this presentation is for the practitioner to become ‘evidence-informed’ in their management of patients with PGP, within a biopsychosocial framework. Previous ‘myths’ are addressed & discarded. This evening presentation will have the format of a lecture portion & a practical-demonstration section.
